Why Nakano Nobuko’s Controversial Comments Sparked Outrage in Japan: A Deep Dive
Political Connections Spark Controversy: "I Take Full Responsibility"

Japanese neuroscientist and media commentator Nobuko Nakano has issued an apology for her controversial remarks about "sexual favors" during a recent broadcast. While attempting to highlight the structural barriers women face in networking, Nakano admitted her explanation was inadequate.
Japanese news outlet Sports Hochi reported that Nakano took to Instagram on the 19th, addressing her comments from the October 15 broadcast of "News to." In her post, she clarified her intentions and apologized to viewers who were offended by her remarks.
The contentious statement occurred during the October 15 episode of Nippon TV's "News to." The program initially covered the resignation of former Agriculture Minister Kazuo Yana before shifting focus to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's cabinet formation. Nakano expressed concern, saying, "I'm troubled by how often Prime Minister Takaichi is said to have few friends. I frequently wonder how different things might be if she weren't a woman."
Nakano then explained that in political circles, networking and talent scouting often occur through evening gatherings. She added, "Women can't utilize these opportunities because they often border on sexual entertainment." The show's host, Yomiuri TV's Chiaki Kuroki, immediately countered, "I don't believe that's the case." This exchange sparked significant online backlash following the broadcast.
In her apology, Nakano clarified that she intended to highlight how business dinners serve as networking opportunities, but women struggle to participate, leading to their exclusion from relationship-building. However, she acknowledged that the limited airtime prevented her from fully explaining her point, resulting in misinterpretation.
Nakano stated, "As the speaker, I bear the responsibility for accurately conveying my intentions during the broadcast. I sincerely apologize to all viewers who were made uncomfortable by my comments." She concluded, "Moving forward, I will be more mindful of the weight of my words and strive to choose them with greater care and precision."
