Hope Set for July 15 Release

Science fiction has long been a challenging genre for the Korean film industry. The upcoming movie “Hope,” slated for a July 15 release, has already generated significant buzz due to its star-studded cast and acclaimed director.

However, industry insiders express concerns about the sci-fi genre, given its history of disappointing performances from both renowned directors and A-list actors. All eyes are now on “Hope” to see if it can break this trend.

“Alien+Human Part 1,” released in 2022, drew 1.54 million viewers. Its 2024 sequel managed only 1.43 million, with both films falling far below their financial targets. The underwhelming performance came as a shock, given that the series was helmed by Choi Dong-hoon, the mastermind behind Korean box office hits like “The Thieves” and “The Drug King.”

While various factors were discussed, the consensus was clear: both films failed to resonate with audiences. Choi reflected on the experience, stating, “I wanted to create a uniquely Korean sci-fi film, despite the challenges. I still find ‘Alien+Human’ fascinating and hope that in a decade, people will look back and appreciate it as an innovative attempt.”

Another high-profile disappointment was “Wonderland,” released in 2024. Despite its pre-release hype and all-star ensemble, the film only managed to attract a meager 620,000 viewers. The sci-fi fantasy explores the concept of reconnecting with deceased loved ones through an AI-powered video call service.

With a cast including Gong Yoo, Tang Wei, Suzy, Park Bo-gum, Jung Yu-mi, and Choi Woo-shik, “Wonderland” seemed destined for success. However, its poor performance sparked online debates, with viewers citing issues such as “superfluous characters disrupting immersion,” “drawbacks of excessive star power,” and “over-reliance on visual appeal.” The film’s struggles also reignited discussions about the challenges of the sci-fi genre in Korea.

While science fiction is popular among Korean audiences, the local industry still lags behind in this category. Korean blockbusters with budgets of 20-30 billion KRW (15-22.5 million USD) pale in comparison to Hollywood productions. Meanwhile, viewers accustomed to high-quality international sci-fi films have set a high bar, leading to a string of disappointing local releases.

Despite these setbacks, established Korean filmmakers continue to push the boundaries of sci-fi. “Hope,” reportedly boasting the largest budget in Korean film history, has raised eyebrows with rumors suggesting it needs to attract 20 million viewers to break even. However, the film’s reception at the 79th Cannes Film Festival has been overwhelmingly positive. After its premiere, “Hope” received a seven-minute standing ovation and garnered praise from international critics. It also emerged as one of the most sought-after titles at the festival’s film market, securing distribution deals in nearly every territory.

By setting a new record for overseas pre-sales and confirming distribution in over 200 countries and regions, “Hope” has already established a stable financial foundation. Now, the focus shifts to whether it can succeed purely on its merits as a Korean sci-fi film.

“Hope” follows Bumsuk, the head of a remote outpost in the Demilitarized Zone, as he investigates reports of a tiger sighting that throws the entire village into chaos. The film features an impressive international cast, including Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, alongside Hollywood stars Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, and Taylor Russell.

“Hope” is set for a nationwide theatrical release on July 15.
